If your website isn’t showing up in search results, your sitemap (or lack of one) might be the reason. Here’s how to fix it fast.
You’ve spent time creating your website, tweaking your homepage, and maybe even writing a few blogs. But when you search your business on Google… crickets. Nothing shows up. No links, no listing, not even your own name.
So what’s going on?
It might not be your content or your offers. It could be something far more technical: your website isn’t indexed properly. And if Google can’t see your site, it can’t share it with the people searching for exactly what you offer.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone, and this is easier to fix than it sounds. Let’s break it down.
What Does It Mean to Be “Indexed” by Google?
Check If Your Website Is Indexed
There’s a super easy way to check this.
Go to Google and type:
site:yourdomain.com
Example:
site:marketingmavens.ca
If your website is indexed, you’ll see a list of the pages Google has found. If you don’t see anything, or only a few outdated pages show up, that’s a sign that something’s missing or broken in the background.
What Is a Sitemap (and Why Does It Matter)?
- What pages exist on your site
- How they’re structured
- When they were last updated
Most websites don’t get indexed properly because they’re missing a sitemap, or it hasn’t been submitted to Google.
If you’re using WordPress with plugins like SEO Press or Rank Math, you likely already have a sitemap. You can usually find it at:
yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
Submit Your Sitemap to Google (in 3 Simple Steps)
To do this, you’ll need to log into (or create) a free Google Search Console account.
Here’s how:
- Visit Google Search Console
- Add and verify your domain (this may involve adding a small code snippet or DNS record, don’t worry, Google walks you through it)
- Navigate to “Sitemaps”in the left menu
- Paste the end of your sitemap URL (ex: sitemap.xml) and hit Submit
Common Reasons Your Site Isn’t Indexed (Yet)
Even with a sitemap, sometimes pages don’t show up. Here’s why:
- Your site is brand new and Google hasn’t crawled it yet
- You don’t have a sitemap (or it hasn’t been submitted)
- Your robots.txt file is blocking search engines
- Pages are marked as “noindex” in your site settings
- Site speed or mobile usability issues are holding you back
- Broken links, missing meta tags, or poorly structured content
