If your website isn’t showing up in search results, your sitemap (or lack of one) might be the reason. Here’s how to fix it fast.

You’ve spent time creating your website, tweaking your homepage, and maybe even writing a few blogs. But when you search your business on Google… crickets. Nothing shows up. No links, no listing, not even your own name.
So what’s going on?

It might not be your content or your offers. It could be something far more technical: your website isn’t indexed properly. And if Google can’t see your site, it can’t share it with the people searching for exactly what you offer.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone, and this is easier to fix than it sounds. Let’s break it down.

What Does It Mean to Be “Indexed” by Google?

When we say your site is “indexed,” we mean that Google has added your pages to its massive database of content. It’s how your site becomes searchable. No indexing = no visibility. You could have the most beautiful website in the world, but if Google hasn’t crawled and indexed it, it might as well be invisible.

Check If Your Website Is Indexed

There’s a super easy way to check this.

Go to Google and type:

site:yourdomain.com

Example:

site:marketingmavens.ca

If your website is indexed, you’ll see a list of the pages Google has found. If you don’t see anything, or only a few outdated pages show up, that’s a sign that something’s missing or broken in the background.

What Is a Sitemap (and Why Does It Matter)?

Think of a sitemap like a table of contents for your website. It tells Google:

Most websites don’t get indexed properly because they’re missing a sitemap, or it hasn’t been submitted to Google.

If you’re using WordPress with plugins like SEO Press or Rank Math, you likely already have a sitemap. You can usually find it at:

yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

Open it in a browser, if you see a list of links or site sections, you’re on the right track!

Submit Your Sitemap to Google (in 3 Simple Steps)

To do this, you’ll need to log into (or create) a free Google Search Console account.

Here’s how:

That’s it! You’ve just told Google how to find and crawl your content.

Common Reasons Your Site Isn’t Indexed (Yet)

Even with a sitemap, sometimes pages don’t show up. Here’s why:

Most of these are quick fixes, but they require knowing where to look.
