Quick Summary

SEO is the work done on the front end and back end of your website so people can actually find you online. It is not a one-time task. It is an ongoing strategy that helps your site show up in searches, work better behind the scenes, and quietly bring in the right clients so you are not relying on constant posting or outreach.

If you want a deeper breakdown of how SEO, structure, and performance work together, I walk through that in more detail in my post on what actually makes a website high-performing.

Why is SEO important for a website anyway?

If you have invested in a website but it is not bringing in leads, inquiries, or bookings, this question usually comes up pretty quickly:

The short answer is this:

A website without SEO is like opening a business and forgetting to put your name on the door.

It might look great. It might function well for the people who already know you. But it is not doing the job it was built to do.

What SEO actually is (in plain language)

SEO is what we do to your website, both on the front end and the back end, to help it get found online and show up in searches.

That includes things like:

Many of these pieces are missed or misunderstood, which is why I see the same issues come up again and again, including the ones I outline in these common website mistakes.

SEO helps your website show up when someone types things like:

Without SEO, your website mostly relies on people already knowing you, clicking a direct link, or finding you through social media.

With SEO, your website works for you even when you are offline.

Why SEO matters if you already have a website

A lot of business owners I work with fall into one of two categories:

In both cases, the issue is rarely the entire website.

More often, it is that SEO was treated as an afterthought or as a one-time setup.

SEO is important because it:

A website should reduce your workload, not add to it.

A real example: what proper SEO can do

One of my clients, Pure Healing with Homeopathy, is a great example of this.

Her website already looked beautiful. The content was thoughtful. The services were solid. But the site was slow, especially on mobile, and the backend was not optimized properly.

We focused heavily on:

The result?

She became booked out by two months.

Not from posting more.

Not from running ads.

From fixing what was already there.

Site speed alone made a massive difference, and it is one of the most overlooked parts of SEO.

Website speed is one of the most overlooked SEO factors, and I explain exactly why it matters and what’s usually slowing sites down in this post on website caching and performance.

The biggest SEO myth I hear all the time

“SEO is a one-time thing. Once it’s done, it’s done.”

This could not be further from the truth.

SEO is about consistency.

Search behaviour changes. Algorithms change. Your business evolves.

A healthy website needs regular check-ins, updates, and refinements. Not constant overhauls.

Just smart, ongoing care.

That is why SEO works best as a strategy, not a checkbox.

Why speed and performance matter more than most people realize

One of my favourite parts of SEO is running performance tests, making changes, and watching the numbers drastically improve.

Speed tests in particular are often ignored or dismissed, but they matter more than people think.

A slow website:

Creates friction on mobile

When a site loads faster, people stay longer, engage more, and are more likely to book or reach out.

Search engines notice that too.

SEO, AEO, and SBO (and why they work together)

Most people hear SEO, AEO, and SBO and think, “That sounds important… and confusing.”

Here is the simple version.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO helps people find you through search engines like Google. It focuses on your website pages, keywords, content, structure, and performance. It is the foundation.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

AEO helps AI tools choose your content as the answer. This includes Google’s AI results, ChatGPT, Bing Copilot, and voice search. It focuses on clear answers, structured content, FAQs, and logical page flow.

SEO helps you get seen.
AEO helps you get recommended.

SBO (Search Brand Optimization)

SBO strengthens your brand signals across the internet. This includes your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, consistent business info, and even offline actions like networking.

SEO builds visibility.
AEO builds authority.
SBO builds trust.

They are not separate strategies. They work best together.

If you’re curious how this shows up in real searches today, especially with AI-generated results, I go deeper into that here: how to show up in Google’s AI answers and ChatGPT search.

Cogs Border

The mistake I see on almost every DIY site

Most people focus almost entirely on aesthetics.

A site can look beautiful and still be invisible.

When SEO is done at all, it is often limited to a few basics, and even those are sometimes implemented incorrectly. Titles, headings, and content structure matter far more than most people realize.

A pretty website is nice.

A functional, findable website is what actually grows a business.

A website should do more than look good, which is why I outline the essentials in what your website should actually include.

Why SEO matters to me personally

For me, SEO is not just about rankings or traffic.

It supports my goal of working less and being more present as a mom.

When a website is optimized properly, it:

That is what I want for my clients too.

Your website should support your life, not demand more from it.

So, is SEO important for your website?

If you want:

Then yes. SEO is not optional. It is not about chasing algorithms. It is about building a website that actually does its job.
