What You Really Need to Know to Get Found on Google
I’m sure you’ve heard the term “SEO” about a hundred times… and maybe nodded along while secretly wondering what the heck it even means (and whether it’s something you actually need to care about).
Here’s the truth: if you have a website, and especially if you’re a mompreneur trying to grow a business while managing all the things, SEO can be one of the most powerful tools in your diaper bag.
The best part? You don’t have to become an expert or spend hours learning code. I was into this long before I got into coding! You just need a basic understanding to start showing up where your dream clients are already looking, on Google.
Let’s break it down.
What Is SEO, Really?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is just a fancy way of saying: making your website easier to find on search engines like Google.
When someone types in “best virtual assistant for small business” or “custom candles near me,” Google scans all the websites out there to decide which ones are most relevant and helpful. SEO is what helps your site get on that list (ideally at the top).
It’s not just for big companies. In fact, SEO is one of the best organic marketing tools for small business owners, especially if you’re growing on a tight budget and don’t have time to post on social every day.
Why SEO Matters for Small Business Owners (Especially Moms)
We all know moms have superpowers, and having an optimized site is like having some extra magic in your arsenal.
SEO works in the background, even when you’re off the clock, doing school pickup, or managing a client call while reheating your coffee for the third time. That reminds me to grab my mug from the microwave!
SEO is:
- Sustainable: Unlike social posts that disappear in 24 hours, SEO brings long-term visibility
- Intentional: You’re showing up for people who are actively searching for what you offer
- Low-maintenance: Once it’s set up, it keeps working (with the occasional update)
And yes, it takes time, but when done right, SEO can bring you consistent, high-quality traffic without the daily hustle.
SEO Basics You Actually Need to Know
Here are the foundational elements to focus on. No fluff. No jargon. Just what matters.
1. Keywords
These are the phrases your ideal clients type into Google when they’re looking for your product or service. Think: “branding photographer in Vancouver” or “custom website design for coaches.”
Use these keywords:
- In your page titles
- In your headings
- Throughout your content (naturally!)
- In your image alt text and meta descriptions
Pro tip: One page = one focus keyword or phrase.
2. Content
Google loves fresh, helpful content. Think E.E.A.T., which stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness.
That could be done though:
- Blog posts answering your audience’s questions
- Well-written service pages
- Clear, benefit-focused homepage copy
Pro tip: The more relevant and useful your content is, the more likely it is to show up in search.
3. Meta Data
Each page on your site has a meta title and meta description. These are what people see on Google before they click. At the very least, fill in these fields!
Make sure yours:
- Include a keyword
- Clearly explain what the page is about
- Entice people to click
Pro tip: Think of your meta title and description like a mini ad for your page. Use active language, naturally work-in your keyword(s), and speak to the benefit the reader will gain by clicking, rather than just describing the page’s content. A little personality goes a long way in standing out on a crowded search page.
4. Site Structure, Performance + Accessibility
Google wants to recommend websites that are fast, user-friendly, and accessible.
Here’s what to look out for:
- Fast loading times: Resize and compress your images (this is a big one! Pun intended!)
- Mobile-friendly layout: Your site should look great and function smoothly on any screen. Use a responsiveness tester
- Clean navigation: Don’t make users dig for what they need
- Accessible design: Use alt text on images, proper heading structure (H1, H2, etc.), readable fonts, and good color contrast for visibility
Pro tip: Even small tweaks here can make a big difference in both user experience and search rankings.
5. Backlinks
Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Google sees them as “votes of confidence.”
A few simple ways to build backlinks:
- Guest blog or collaborate with others in your industry
- Get featured in directories or interviews
- Link between your own blog posts
Pro tip: Start with relationships you already have, other small business owners, collaborators, or podcast hosts you’ve worked with. Even one or two quality backlinks from trusted sources can boost your site’s authority more than dozens of low-quality ones. And don’t forget internal linking (from one blog post to another), Google counts that, too!
6. Local SEO (if you serve a specific area)
If you’re a local service provider (like a photographer, designer, or coach with in-person offers), local SEO helps people nearby find you.
Start by:
- Guest blog or collaborate with others in your industry
- Get featured in directories or interviews
- Link between your own blog posts
Pro tip: Keep your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) consistent across all platforms, including your website, Google Business Profile, and any online directories. This helps Google trust your info and improves your local rankings. Bonus points for collecting a few Google reviews, they matter more than you think!
How to Get Started (Without Overwhelm)
If you’re ready to dip your toes into SEO, start with these steps:
- Identify a few keywords your dream clients might be searching for
- Update one page on your site with those keywords in mind
- Start creating one blog post per month that answers common questions or showcases your expertise
- Run a basic website audit or ask me to do one for you
- Or delegate it! (Hi, that’s where I come in!)
SEO Doesn’t Have to Be Scary
SEO might sound like one more thing on your already full plate, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming or overly technical. You don’t need to master it all, and you definitely don’t need to do it alone during nap time or between Zoom calls.
Start small. Stay curious. And remember, done is better than perfect.
